India’s Aman Sehrawat has secured the nation’s first wrestling medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 21-year-old wrestler clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle event, elevating India’s medal tally to six at these Games.

Sehrawat’s Path to Bronze

On Friday, Aman Sehrawat delivered an exceptional performance to claim India’s fifth bronze at the Paris Olympics. His decisive victory came against Puerto Rico’s Darian Toi Cruz, with a score of 13-5 in the bronze medal match. Sehrawat’s journey to the podium began with a series of impressive victories in the earlier rounds.

Impressive Performance in Early Rounds

Sehrawat showcased his skill from the onset of the competition. In the round of 16 and quarterfinal bouts, he won by superiority, demonstrating dominance and technical prowess. His quarterfinal win against Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakarov was particularly notable, reflecting his strong form leading up to the semifinals.

Semifinal Setback

In the semifinals, Sehrawat faced a tough opponent in the form of top-seed Rei Higuchi of Japan. Despite his strong performance throughout the earlier rounds, Sehrawat experienced a straightforward defeat to Higuchi, which shifted his focus to the bronze medal match.

Bronze Medal Match Highlights

The bronze medal match against Darian Toi Cruz was fiercely contested. Toi Cruz initially took the lead by earning the first point after forcing Sehrawat out of the playing area. However, Sehrawat quickly responded, gaining two points with a strategic leg lock and flip.

The match was tightly contested as both wrestlers exchanged points with swift moves. By the end of the first half, Sehrawat led 4-3. In the second half, Sehrawat extended his lead with a strong start, locking Toi Cruz and gaining a three-point advantage.

Despite suffering an injury, which required medical attention, Toi Cruz struggled to keep up with Sehrawat’s relentless pace. Sehrawat capitalized on this, adding more technical points to secure a comfortable 13-5 win and the bronze medal.

Historical Context and Achievements

Aman Sehrawat is now the sixth male wrestler from India to win an Olympic medal. His predecessors include KD Jadhav (bronze in 1952 Helsinki), Sushil Kumar (bronze in Beijing 2008 and silver in London 2012), Yogeshwar Dutt (bronze in London 2012), Ravi Dahiya (silver in Tokyo 2020), and Bajrang Punia (bronze in Tokyo 2020).

Sehrawat’s victory marks a significant achievement for Indian wrestling, contributing to the nation’s medal tally at the ongoing Olympics. He remains the only male wrestler representing India at these Games, making his achievement even more notable.

Looking Ahead

As the Paris Olympics progress, India’s hopes for additional medals continue. On Saturday, Reetika Hooda is set to compete in the women’s freestyle 76kg event, aiming to further boost India’s medal count.

In addition, Vinesh Phogat’s situation is under scrutiny. Phogat, who was disqualified from the women’s 50kg gold medal bout due to being found overweight, has appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS has agreed to hear the appeal and will make a final decision before the conclusion of the Olympics.
