Georgia Tops Preseason AP Poll Top 25, Ohio State Follows as SEC and Big Ten Dominate Rankings

As the superconference era kicks off in college football, Georgia has once again secured the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll, marking the second consecutive year the Bulldogs have entered the season as the top-ranked team. The rankings, released on Monday, reflect the increasing power of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Big Ten, which collectively dominate the top 10.

Georgia’s Dominance

Georgia’s stronghold on the No. 1 position comes as no surprise. The Bulldogs received 46 first-place votes and amassed 1,532 points from the panel of 62 media members who cover college football. This comfortable lead over the competition sets the stage for what could be another historic season for Georgia, as they aim to become the first team to win three consecutive national championships in the modern era.

Coach Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs have maintained an incredible 42-2 record over the last three seasons, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in college football. Quarterback Carson Beck, now in his fifth season with Georgia, leads an offense that remains as formidable as ever. Beck’s patience and resilience, having waited three years to become the starter, paid off last season when he completed 72% of his passes, with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions.

“We’re dealing with new challenges this year,” Smart said during SEC media days. “We want to recreate ourselves to stay in the best light we can.” With the playoff expanding from four to 12 teams this season, Georgia will have more room for error, but their ambitions remain unchanged: to end the season as national champions.

Ohio State at No. 2 and Big Ten’s Rise

Trailing closely behind Georgia is Ohio State, which claimed the No. 2 spot with 15 first-place votes and 1,490 points. The Buckeyes, representing the Big Ten, are poised to challenge Georgia’s dominance this season. Ohio State’s consistent performance and recruitment have kept them in the national title conversation year after year.

The Big Ten’s influence in the top 10 doesn’t stop with Ohio State. New conference member Oregon has made an impressive debut at No. 3, even earning a first-place vote. Penn State and Michigan round out the Big Ten’s representation in the top 10, securing the No. 8 and No. 9 spots, respectively. The Wolverines, despite losing head coach Jim Harbaugh, quarterback J.J. McCarthy, and several other key players to the NFL draft, are still expected to be a formidable force.

SEC’s Power Play

The SEC continues to assert its dominance, not only with Georgia at the helm but also with four teams in the top 10. Alabama, now entering its first season without legendary coach Nick Saban since 2006, sits at No. 5. Despite the coaching change, the Crimson Tide remains a formidable contender. Mississippi, another SEC powerhouse, occupies the No. 6 spot, further emphasizing the conference’s strength.

Texas, which joins Georgia in the SEC this season, has made its presence felt by securing the No. 4 spot in the preseason rankings. This move into the SEC only heightens the conference’s status as a superpower in college football, with nine of the 25 ranked teams hailing from the SEC.

The New Power Four Era

This year’s preseason poll is unprecedented, with only four conferences represented: the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC. The consolidation of power within these conferences has effectively reduced the traditional Power Five to the Power Four. The SEC leads the pack with nine ranked teams, followed by the Big Ten with six, the Big 12 with five, and the ACC with four.

Conference realignment has drastically reshaped the landscape of college football. The Big Ten now boasts 18 schools, while the SEC and Big 12 each have 16, and the ACC has 17 football teams. This realignment has left the Pac-12 with only two schools, further diminishing its influence in the national rankings.

Challenges Ahead for Defending Champions

Michigan, the defending national champion, finds itself in a unique position. The Wolverines enter the season ranked No. 9, marking the lowest preseason ranking for a defending champion since Auburn in 2011. The departure of key figures, including head coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback J.J. McCarthy, has led to tempered expectations.

Washington, last year’s runner-up in the College Football Playoff, faces even greater challenges. The Huskies are unranked in the preseason poll, a first for a team that reached the championship game the previous season. The loss of head coach Kalen DeBoer, who replaced Nick Saban at Alabama, and significant roster turnover has left Washington in rebuilding mode.
