Peggy : Ugliest dog Deadpool
Peggy, Britain’s “ugliest” dog, has made an unexpected leap from local fame to Hollywood stardom. Her transformation into a celebrity is described as “surreal” by her owner, Holly Middleton. Peggy, a five-year-old pugese a mix of pug and Chinese crested secured a role as “Dogpool” in the new Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine after winning a national contest for being the ugliest dog.
Holly Middleton, from East Yorkshire, reflects on the whirlwind journey: “Not in my wildest dreams did I think anything like that would have ever happened.” She added, “When we submitted her picture [to the ugly dog competition], I didn’t think it would get to the heights it did.”
Despite Peggy’s newfound fame and “massive fan base,” Middleton reassures that Peggy remains grounded. “She’s still just plain old Peg,” says Middleton, noting that the pugese’s “reserved and lazy” demeanor has only slightly changed with the boost in confidence from her time on set.
Ryan Reynolds, who stars in the film, was seen kissing Peggy’s head during a promotional event, highlighting the affectionate atmosphere on set. “It was really, really strange not to have her here,” Mrs. Middleton said about Peggy’s time away. “I’ve got two boys and they missed her terribly. We didn’t tell them where she was. Everything had to be kept quiet. I’m glad she’s back. We missed her.”
Witnessing Peggy’s red carpet debut in New York was described by Mrs. Middleton as “surreal.” She enjoyed seeing Peggy “looking really comfortable” with celebrities and appreciated the “gentle” treatment from the cast. “I just loved every second of it. I loved seeing her up there doing her thing. She just looked so chilled and so happy.”
Currently, there are no plans for Peggy’s future film roles, as she remains a “family pet” first and foremost. “There’s nothing she likes more than either cuddling with us on the couch or snuggling in her bed,” Middleton shared.
Despite her global fame, Peggy is still just a “regular dog” in the village. Her newfound popularity has led to a positive shift in public perception. “Before all of this, just the way she looks she would get attention, but it was usually people sort of nudging each other and whispering, ‘Oh, what’s wrong with that dog.’ So since everything’s happened, the public perception of Peggy, and whether she’s beautiful, ugly, or whatever, has definitely changed for the better,” said Mrs. Middleton.
